Thank you for staying engaged with us. Since our last update, we have heard directly from a number of neighbors about the perimeter fencing installed at the property, and we want to share changes the project team has made in response to that feedback.

What's Changing

Based on conversations with residents, the project team has made two meaningful adjustments to the site work currently underway:

Improved pedestrian connectivity from Brookdale to the Metro. We heard clearly from neighbors that maintaining a safe, convenient walking route from the Brookdale community to the Friendship Heights Metro is a priority.

The fencing plan and pedestrian access points have been revised to preserve and improve that connection so neighbors can continue to walk to transit, shops, and services. The perimeter fencing has been relocated at both ends of the property to allow more direct access to Willard Avenue and Friendship Blvd.

A grass setback along Willard Avenue.

To keep the sidewalk experience comfortable for our neighbors (and their pets) the project team has added a small grass setback between the public sidewalk and the perimeter fence along most of Willard Avenue. We hope this change will make a real difference for pedestrians and neighbors who use this stretch every day.

What's New

Soil testing is currently taking place at two locations in Brookdale Park. These tests are necessary to ensure that any future improvements to the park have adequate stormwater management facilities. Two borings are currently in place with further testing scheduled later this week. The borings were placed to avoid any root zone disturbance and will be removed following the additional testing. The area will be restored following the removal.

Continued Feedback

These improvements are a direct reflection of the conversations we have been having and the feedback we have received. We hope that you will continue to share feedback and direct any questions to the Friendship Commons website.

What's Next

In the weeks ahead, neighbors can expect:

  • Continued site preparation activity behind the perimeter fence.

  • Additional updates as project milestones are reached.
